Website or Web Presence? That is the question.

The main focus of Google is to present the most relevant website/information to the person doing the search in a fraction of a second.  So how does Google find the most relevant websites?  They have an algorithm that calculates it.  They try to search and index every single website and page out there on the internet.  The key is to make Google keep coming back to your site.  How do you do it?  By, knowing what Google considers is important and relevant with a  website.

It used to be a website with good title tags and meta tags would do it, but not anymore.  They look at 6 different areas to come up with their relevance.

1.       The Site should be optimized.
2.       The Site should have relevant content about the subject being searched.
3.       The Site should have quality and relevant inbound links.
4.       The Site/Business should have a Google Place Page associated with it.
5.       The Site should have a video on it.
6.       The Site should have a blog associated with it.

Why optimization?  That is how your site is found.  But, be careful (Remember JC Penney).  Why relevant content?  It gives the reader the information they are looking for.  You want to educate they people who are reading your site.  Why quality inbound links?  It adds trust to your site in the eyes of Google.  You are linked to directories they already trust.  Why a Place Page?  This Fall, Google said it is important, so enough said.  Why Video?  Google owns youtube.com.  The largest video site on the web.  Why a blog?  Here is what Google Analytics is saying about a blog.  “Successful blog posts pull in tons of traffic from search engines, and other blogs/websites.  They can also provide huge spikes in traffic when they “go viral”, which occurs when many people quickly spread a link to an Internet destination through social networks like Youtube, Twitter and Facebook.”  Click here to read the entire article.

Mobile devices are changing the way people live

It might just be me but I cannot type on my new phone.  I recently picked up a Droid and I am not used to typing on it. I can't seem to press the right key.  I am constantly hitting the back key if the word recognizer doesn't pick the right word.  Most of the time it does pick the right word.  But, sometimes it is very frustrating to type something out.

With that being said, I do a lot of internet searching on my phone.  Both personal and business.  I have found myself using one of the best buttons ever created for a phone.  The microphone button.  I can say what I want to type and somehow the phone will recognize it and present it as words on the screen.  All I have to do after that is press search.

This is the wave of the future.  More people are using their mobile devices.  Even the Lady who walked into the fountain at the mall was on her mobile device.  I didn't see her walking into the fountain with her face buried in the Phone Book looking up something.  Technology is taking over.  If you are not set up to be found over the internet you are missing a huge opportunity!!!!  Times are changing, are you willing to adapt?

"Divorce" is Most-Searched Legal Term on FindLaw.com

People who need Legal information search online, and their #1 destination is Findlaw.com.  Every month, four million people search FindLaw.com for legal information and assistance.  So what are people looking up?  The number one search term over the past 12 months is..... Divorce  and its related terms.  The related terms include Child Support and Child Custody.

"In today’s society, where approximately half of all marriages end in divorce, divorce filings are a fairly common legal proceeding," said Stephanie Rahlfs, attorney and editor with FindLaw.com.  So what do people do when they are going through a difficult domestic time.  They turn to the web for information about it.

Most people do not go online looking for an Attorney.  They go online and look for information about their legal need and happen to either end up on an Attorneys website or FindLaw.com.

Content isn't just Content

Have you ever written something for a specific audience?  Maybe a newsletter for your school or a speech for a specific audience or even better.....a blog?  When you write the content, do you think about who is listening or who will read it?  Would the president of the United States give the same speech about freedom to a graduating class of a University as he would to a class of 1st graders?  The answer is....I hope he wouldn't.  Why not?  Because his speech needs to designed so the listening audience understands and relates to what he is trying to say.

The same goes for the content on your website.  It should be written for the Search Engine and the person you are trying to target.  There is a lot that goes into what a Search Engine reads so I would recommend going with a company like FindLaw who understands what the various search engines are looking for.

The second piece of the puzzle is writing the content to target the write person.  If you are a criminal attorney, would you write your content to look like a legal brief?  No.  You need to speak to the level of our audience and use keywords and phrases that relate to the reader.

Right now, Content is king on the Internet.  But, it is just one of the pieces of the web presence puzzle.  You could be missing the a huge audience if your site is not geared to correct audience.
